Besides, your solution involved creating an Xcode project, did it
not? Even if it wasn't a project containing the code being
debugged and even if you only created one project for this purpose
*ever*, the original poster said "without an Xcode project", so it
could reasonably be argued that David's response wasn't piffle at
all because Xcode needs *a* project in order to debug.
