OK, but that's still just as much work as removing/readding. It makes
no sense when all that is wrong is the base path.

If you've got a bunch of files in the same directory, put them in a group, set them to "group relative", point the group at the directory containing the files, then select the entire set of files, select "get info", select "Choose...", and select the directory containing the files.
