I have 1.25 GB of RAM (running 10.4.9).
Is there any way to tell if I am swapping?

Open a Terminal window and run the command:
$ vm_stat 3
Ignore the first line, but then keep an eye on the subsequent output
(every 3 sec) -- the numbers in the last two columns are page-ins and
page-outs.

[kaelin@aoide kaelin]$ vm_stat 5

PS: I believe your machine maxes out at 2GB... So there is a little
room to improve things, but not much. You really want one of the new
MacBook Pros w/ 4GB of RAM. ;-)
