Your fundamental misapprehension is that using gcc from the command line is simpler than using Xcode. You will discover that, as hard as it is to learn to drive a car, more people can do it than can /build an engine from parts./
Most people are drivers, not mechanics; my job is to be a mechanic, so I want to learn how to become one.

PS: Perhaps a little more info: though primarily a Mac shop, nobody around here really knows how to use Xcode - they're all CodeWarrior & MPW veterans and since things went to OSX, have been relying on a combination of using Web-based development and Python to make OSX compatible apps - so I don't have a local support base when it comes to using/learning Xcode. I *do* have a local support base when it comes to using Unix (I'd characterize myself as an "intermediate" level user, but we have a couple people around here who are definitely experts); unfortunately, those Unix experts are Python developers with next to nil C++ experience, but at least when I have Unix questions I can get those answered pretty easily.
