Yes! Ran into this the first time I tried to compile on a
UNIX system and thought it was nuts, then. "Whatta ya mean
you won't compile a file named fred or fred.george!? I
just pointed you at the file! That's all you need to
know." I still think it's a little bit nuts, but can
understand that it's convenient for the compiler writers...
and yet another frivolous thing that developers are
expected to remember, clogging up valuable brain-space that
could better be used otherwise.
And now it's a convenience for file system developers who
don't want to keep track of all that meta-data.
