You may be making an assumption.
Not an assumption, I'm just repeating what I've heard for years. ;-)
And I'm not aware of any currently supported tools specifically
targeted at Mac software developers.
Someone should tell Bare Bones that BBEdit isn't making money, so they
can't possibly afford to give away TextWrangler, either.
I've never thought of BBEdit as a "developer tool" because, while a
lot of developers use it and it clearly has a lot of features
targeted at developers, it's also a powerful text editor non-software
developers with certain needs can use as well. I'm not sure a bug
reporter application would enjoy the same market base, unless you
bundled it with an ADC membership so anyone could use to to file bug
reports and ask for new features in the OS. Hmm, if you could do that
you'd probably make a bundle. LOL
And be sure to CC all those others who give away software in order to
attract business to their other offerings, e.g. services, not just
software.
Sure. Just which of those makers of Mac software development tools do
you have in mind? ;-)
Then there are developers who write software just for fun.
Some even do it to solve their own immediate problem,
especially if Apple isn't addressing it.
Or so I've heard.
If you're doing it for fun then anything's possible (but smaller
projects like this are more likely ;-). There is a gotcha here,
though. Any bug reporter application would have to integrate with
Apple's Radar system, so no one can just go off and write such a
beast on his own. You'd need Apple's help and cooperation, and I
suspect their attitude would be that they'd write their own before
they'd spend time and resources helping you write one. Plus, Apple
could well have reservations about letting anyone outside Apple have
any access to their database.
Just my $0.02, though. Someone could be halfway done writing one even
as we speak for all I know. ;-)
