I have found that the executable has got some very strange settings (eg
under the General tab it says No Value for standard Input/Output.  Although
this appears as a list, no other option is shown or offered.

I have rebuilt the target from scratch and now it is working OK.  Excellent!

Many thanks for your thoughts which set me off in the right direction.
