How do I sample kernel_task?

I'm trying to help track down a problem in a project where the CPU
essentially gets locked up.

In trying to sample kernel_task, I'm told I don't have rights to do
such. I've tried using sudo sample, but still cannot sample it.

I've checked the archives and haven't found any details on this.

Is there a specific way to sample kernel_task?
Do I need to do some other setup to accomplish this? If so, what steps
are needed?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
