upgrading libtool and automake

I would like to install some packages that say
You must have libtool 1.4 installed to compile ...
You must have automake 1.7.x or later installed to compile ...
Is it OK to download these from sourceforge and overwrite the installed ones (i.e. are they backwards compatible?) or should these be installed in a separate place? Will xcode 2.5 or 3.0 provide more up-to-date versions?
