While crafting a reply to this thread, I admitted, in the interest of candor, that it was conceivable that after a lifetime's experience, I'd missed an exponent. I checked.

In the case of a double with a long mantissa, the Xcode debugger obscures the exponent.

I missed it.

I am sorry and ashamed for the trial I have been on the resources and patience of this list. Thank you all again for your efforts to help.
