-h does nothing. I presume you're telling me to read the docs?
Really what I want to know is if there's a way to run spin control
remotely.
Shark is pretty complex, and I was hoping not to have to read the
whole manual to do something pretty specific.
Much simpler than Shark is the "sample" tool. They don't necessarily
do exactly the same thing [sample is roughly equivalent to Shark's
"Time Profile (All Thread States)"], but getting a sample of a frozen
or spinning process is still a very good way to figure out what's
going on.
However, it sounds like you're seeing a problem with the Window Server
process getting stuck. I don't expect that a sample will be useful in
diagnosing this.
Your first step should be to eliminate any possible external causes --
any third-party kernel extensions, drivers, etc. Perhaps try to
reproduce the issue in Safe Mode.
If it still happens, it might be a bug in Mac OS X or its video
drivers. For example, we used to see an issue with one of our OpenGL
games locking up the Window Server on certain Macs, and it was fixed
by an update to Leopard.
It is also possible that it's a hardware problem, but it would be
strange for it to affect more than one machine.
Cheers,
Ken
