Question: 1) where should the Xcode temporary directories be located?
In this particular case, the directory in question is .XcodeSCMTemp in your per-user temporary directory (usually /private/var/tmp/folders.<pid>/TemporaryItems/ If you've made this directory inaccessable somehow, try deleting it.
