Build settings from command execution?

Hi all,
In my .xcconfig files, I'd like to be able to set a build
setting based on the execution of a simple shell command,
evaluated at build time. An example of this might be something like:
BUILD_HOST = `hostname`
(And in fact I tried using the backtick syntax, but it didn't work.)
In searching the documentation, I wasn't able to find any
instructions on how this might be done. Is it possible to set a
build setting in an xcconfig file based on a shell command at
build time? If it's not possible to use a config file, how might
it be done otherwise?
Thanks for any advice,
R.
