After writing a long response, I played more with ideas your suggestion inspired. I had adjusted some key-bindings to mimic the fn keys of visual studio (my dev env for many years) for debugging, and somehow had messed up the find functionality in the process (perhaps accidentally mapping the enter key?) When I went back to default xcode key bindings, find started working again. I then carefully remapped my debugging keys, and find still works.
Thanks very much for your help.
