Well I use Xcode in 2 circumstances. One is on a big 24'' monitor and
the other is on a 13.3'' MacBook. The MacBook has a resolution of only
1280x800, which basically means I have to make windows as small as
possible because of the reduced screen estate.
On a big screen the auto-opening of the editor is not a problem because:
1) I have enough screen estate so that I can make windows larger.
2) The windows being large means the editor can display more useful
code, as opposed to just 2 lines of code on the small screen.
On a small screen I can't fit more then a few lines of code in the
editor, and when the editor opens, it reduces the already small space
available for the other controls in the window.
