BTW - I promise I read the NSBox.pdf and NSImage.pdf docs before posting my question. There is no mention of 'overlap' in either one.
...because this issue isn't in any way specific to those classes.
If you review the documentation for NSView and Cocoa drawing you will come across this information.

Thank you very much for chiming in with that additional info - I do beg everyone's pardon.
Sometimes it's a challenge to know where the secret incantations are located for a given situation.
Evidently, I could have dug deeper and then would have discovered what you mention.
Here's hoping this whole discourse ends up in the google database and it saves someone else a waste of their time.
