I'm with you. I would love to get a comprehensive list of all the things Xcode is doing or trying to do in background beyond basic text editor functionality, and instructions for how to switch each one off if necessary.
Yes, I find pasting odd syntax (e.g., prototype copied from reference doc) causes Xcode to spin wheel and sometimes crash before I can edit it into shape.
It's also doing something (indexing?) for almost 1 minute when I open a project for the first time.
Until we get the missing manual, you could trying selectively turning off Code Completion, syntax coloring, etc. I'd love to know what if anything helps.
