What's proper way to exit IB?

I have a Cocoa project with tabs and every time I use IB3 to make a few minor changes, my program no longer runs. I believe I must select certain objects in IB3 before doing the Save, but I have so far been unable to determine the exact steps to do this correctly. I've spent hours on this and still don't have a solution. I know it must be something basic I'm missing but I'd appreciate it if someone could help me out. Thanks.
