Debugging a Makefile project in Xcode3

There are some whispers on the Internet saying this is possible, but I
spent an hour or two failing to get Xcode 3 to attach the GUI debugger
on my program.

Here is a hello world example I want to debug:
http://static.webvm.net/helloworld.tar.gz

Can anyone here get in going within Xcode's visual debugger following the guide:
http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Porting/Conceptual/PortingUnix/preparing/chapter_3_section_4.html

I kept getting GDB b0rking on several different status codes. Also
xcode was telling all the time to restart it. I think I am having a
bad day. :)

Kind regards from Guildford,
