Jon and I worked on this problem off-list, and he found that the solution was to upgrade my old nib from IB 2.x to IB 3.x That is, in Interface Builder, click Save As... File Type = NIB 3.x.
My nib contains an RBSplitView which, although I had installed Rainer Brockerhoff's new RBSplitView.ibplugin for IB3, it was not being properly loaded because of the old NIB 2.x format. This may have been a factor in the problem.
