multi-key bindings and split windows

So I was ecstatic to find the View->Split Horizontally/Vertically
feature, but am missing a few pieces to the puzzle.
First, if I split an editing window into, say, right and left panes
and then open a file while in the right pane, the new file always
goes to the left pane. The same is true for stuff like "Jump to
definition" as well. So is there any way to get Xcode to open a file
in the *current* pane?
Second, is there any way (key-bindable method) of switching between
panes? Any scriptable/hackable hints at all would be much appreciated.
Also, there was an unanswered post about multi-key bindings back in
March of last year that I'm also curious about. Clearly multi-key
bindings have been deliberately disabled for "menu" actions. Is
there any way around this? Like taking an action out of the menu?
I'm using 2.5 and would love to hear if any related functionality has
been changed for 3.0.
I've been using Emacs to edit and Xcode to compile up until this
point, and I *really* want to use Xcode for everything. Any advice
would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Tyler
