The Xcode 3.1 Release Notes say: " The NIB Files smartgroup now shows .xib
files as well."

This isn't the case on my computer, either for existing or new projects. The
wild card string in both cases is still "*.nib". What is the wildcard string
or regular expression that was intended to be used in the NIB smart group to
make it pick up .xib files as well?

The new string should be "*.?ib".
Don't now why it does not works for you, but it works for me at least. (for both new and old projects).
