XCode IB 3.1 w/iPhone

hi,
Stupid question time...

I'm trying to hook an outlet UILabel to my object which I've created in IB in my ViewController xib. I see the outlet that I've defined show up when I ctrl-click my object under "Outlets" and it has an empty dot. However when I ctrl-click/drag from my UILabel to my object nothing pops up. I've also tried dragging from the dot to my UILabel (which I know is wrong because of the direction), and from the UILabel to the dot, but it never connects. My outlet also shows up properly in the Class Actions of the Inspector. The actual outlet is defined as an NSString.

I know I'm missing something obvious with this...any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
S
