Paul,
Yes, you can see how deep into your path you have to go before you get
to /usr/bin, where the right ruby is presumably located.
To see if you have a .profile file, use ls -a , not ls -l (sorry I led
you astray there).
You can just type "cat .profile" in the terminal for a quick and dirty
way to see if it exists and if it does what's in it.
If you don't have one, you can use any editor that can write text to
create it. Use TextEdit as the lowest common denominator, or vi, or
emacs, or BBedit, or cat, or you can probably do it in Xcode as well.
Just be sure to save the file in your home directory with the
name .profile.
