XIB files not searchable in Xcode

There's a minor difference when using XIB files instead of NIBs that's not obvious at the first glance, but I think it's worth to mention as it may have impact on your workflow:

With NIB files it's possible to search a project for a particular class name, and Xcode will also find all NIB files that contain instances of this class (they are found in the NIB's designable.nib or classes.nib).

This is a quite handy feature. It allows you to quickly check if and where a particular class is actually used.

It allows you to check if it's safe to remove a class from a project. Or if you add an outlet to a class you can quickly find all NIB files that use this class and add connections for this new outlet if appropriate. Or if you change the implementation of a class or add new features, it helps you to find all areas of your project that should be tested.

With XIB files, this seems to be no longer possible, they no longer appear in the search result when searching for a class name.

However, there's a workaround: You can run the refactoring tool to show a preview for renaming the class in question. The list of affected files then also shows all XIB files that have references to this class.

n.h.
