Do you know for a fact that those glyphs are available on those Tiger machines?
Yes, they are. Obviously not in all fonts.

As I said, the problem is only cosmetic, in the menu only.
In using my app, selecting one of these menu item generates two pieces of info:
(1) font name, as a NS/CFString and
(2) a UniChar value (of the special character in question).


These aren't truly weird UniCodes or fonts. Open Bullet is one, large black square is another. When we can specify the font (assuming the font is installed) we have seen no problems with missing chars; that is, it seems reasonable to assume that the fonts installed on the 10.4 machines have an adequate or identical character repertoire as those on the 10.5 machines.
