Definitely not an Xcode question.

Two useful sources you should probably be aware of:

http://www.finkproject.org/
http://darwinports.com/

Using either of those to install subversion will be nice and easy... and it's easy to keep it up to date. Personally, I prefer fink, but DarwinPorts has a slightly different collection of packages. If you go with fink, I would advise adding /sw/src to your list of directories that Time Machine doesn't back up--or that Spotlight doesn't index. Things just run a little more smoothly this way.

My problem is that the svn repository structure seems not to be built by either the Leopard install or the Xcode 3 install. Guess I have to build it by hand.

All I really want to do is checkout code from a network repository to my disk.
I am doing an svn co svn://xxx.xxx
and I get an error ...

the /var/local stuff isn't there

svn: Berkeley DB error for filesystem /var/local/subversion/xxxx/db while opening 'nodes' table:
