Chris is quite correct; the underscore is the most common symbol
prefix character.
I wouldn't go that far. Some examples of those that don't use it are:
* Linux/*
* Windows/x86_64
* Solaris/*
* FreeBSD/i386
* FreeBSD/x86_64
* NetBSD/ppc
* NetBSD/m68k
* Gameboy Advance & Nintendo DS
* MorphOS
* BeOS & Haiku
* Classic Mac OS
* Netware
I think overall it's pretty evenly split between those that do and
those that don't...
