Does this happen with the official xcode release version?
Anyway to stop it?

There is at least one known problem that matches that description in Xcode 3.0. I don't know of any workaround, besides waiting for a fix in Xcode. If you have access to pre-release versions of Xcode, you should see if you can still reproduce that problem with the *latest* pre-release version - And if so file a bug report (see instructions further down). Note that the nature of this problem is such that you would have to reboot your computer after installing the new version of Xcode, before attempting to reproduce the problem.

I've also run into a couple of other odd situations when it would declare the project read only or an individual file as non-writable.
No version control turned on and permissions/locks set to normal.

Make sure that you file formal bug reports for anything like this that you bump into:

	<http://developer.apple.com/bugreporter/>

Include information on what version of Mac OS X and Xcode that you're using. If you know how to reproduce the problem, make sure to mention that. Please also include any errors or warnings logged to the console (/Applications/Utilities/Console.app).

Thanks,
