With all of what Sherm Pendley said in mind, you can also build separate applications for each architecture, so that the downloads are samller for any given architecture. You will need to label the distribution binaries clearly so that people know which one they need.

Also, if you only care about 1 architecture, i386 for example, then you can also only target your app at that architecture and the resulting binary will be smaller as a result.
