Using guardmalloc

I am trying to use GuardMalloc but I get the message "try set start- with-shell 0" in the console.
I found a message stating


"The workaround for it -- to which the gdb output alludes -- involves adding
set start-with-shell 0
to your ~/.gdbinit file."


But I don't see such a file, the only similar file I see in ~/ is .gdb_history

????
