I would like to second what Leo is experiencing. For me, Xcode 3 works auto-completion works the same: I see the grayish line, but no automatic popup. Tried it on my account, on a fresh account, same behavior. So I would also like to know if there's any way to get the popup to appear automatically in Xcode 3.

There is not; this is the designed behavior of Code Sense in Xcode 3. Code Sense provides inline completion automatically, and shows a menu of available completions when you press escape, F5, or control-comma. (That's using the default Xcode keyboard layout.)

I'm partial to control-comma, because control-period means "accept the current/most likely completion" and control-slash mean "go to the next placeholder token in completed text." On a US QWERTY keyboard, these keys are all right next to each other and just below the home row position for the right hand, making them easy to use for gestures.

If you have feature or enhancement requests for Xcode, or you encounter bugs, please visit http://bugreport.apple.com/ and file a bug. Don't worry about whether other reports already exist; both the number of duplicate bugs and the information contained within duplicate bugs can be very useful in tracking down issues and in determining their impact.
