When you say "select a symbol", do you mean select the name of the class either in the class declaration, the class declaration, or a usage of the class? Refactoring doesn't work from, say, the Project Symbols smart group, only from a source code file or header. Also, the text editor has to have focus. You can't, say, have selected something in the editor, and then select a group in the Groups & Files tree.

For more potential reasons why refactoring might not be enabled, see this relatively exhaustive list I came up with back in August:

I've checked all the items in your list.
None of them Apply to my project.
I am selecting the class name in an editor window, by the way.
One special item though: My project is under version control-
not from the IDE, but from the command line, using a third party build of
subversion 1.5.2.

That shouldn't be an issue.

If you can file a bug and include your project, or at least a subset of your project that can reproduce the problem, we would appreciate it.

Note you still haven't told me which version of Xcode you are using. You're obviously using an Xcode 3.x version on Leopard, because refactoring is available. There are some bugfixes in Xcode 3.1, though I don't remember any offhand that made this sort of selection validation work better. It would still be helpful to know, however, so be sure to include that in the bug.

I don't seem able to get it enabled how do I fix this?
I want to rename a class MailSupport to TNMailSupport
