In case anyone else is interested, I got a direct answer from Apple on
this issue.
There is no 64-bit version of libtool. So, if a library grows beyond
the ability of this 32-bit tool to handle it, the _only_ choice is to
split the library into smaller pieces.
sigh.
I still do wonder if the huge increase in DWARF information is
worthwhile.
