Well, the need for testing should be kept to a minimum. It has become too
prominent lately with TDD. Of course, testing will always be needed, but
dependence on testing should be minimized. In fact, that is so important it
is a Deming principle "Cease dependence on testing".

I guess you're referring to this:

"3. Cease dependence on mass inspection

Eliminate the need for mass inspection as the way of life to achieve
quality by building quality into the product in the first place.
Require statistical evidence of built in quality in both manufacturing
and purchasing functions."

I'm not an expert on Deming and his list of principles, but if I
wanted to apply that advice to the creation of software, I'd see that
as an incitement to reduce *manual* testing, specifically through the
use of tools such as unit testing (along with, of course, static
analysis where applicable) to provide the required "statistical
evidence of built in quality"

Thanks for looking that up. I've been tidying up my library lately and could not find the Deming book. It'll probably turn up when I'm not looking – I should have tested my tidying!

It's not to say, don't bother with testing, just I think you can't rely on it, just as you can't rely on anything in writing software – we still get it wrong. Even those of us sensible enough not to do Windows.

We sure do spin off on some wild tangents on this list! :)

Probably should have been discussing on Objective-C list, although this does touch on issues of the development environment as a whole I guess.
