Speaking of snapshots, the last time I tried creating one when Xcode
3 was still in beta, it was very slow. It doesn't seem to have
improved. I'm currently running a "Make Snapshot" of a project that
has, oh, maybe 7500 files. It's been running for over 30 minutes now
on a core-duo Intel with 4G of RAM.
Are these even practical for projects with thousands of files?
While the performance of the Xcode Snapshot can still be improved
quite a bit, it's not expected that the initial snapshot should be
significantly slower than a simple copy operation of the same files in
the Finder / Terminal. You might want to file a bug report if you find
this to be the case - If so, please include any information about your
system + project that you think can be of importance.

Is it only the initial snapshot that's this slow and subsequent ones
are just deltas?
Yes.
