attaching to a process

I'm running Xcode 2.5 on OSX 10.4.11 and trying to attach to a running process.
In the Debug->Attach menu, all the entries in the list are greyed out. Altho the process where I want to attach is listed, but I can't select it.
in ThreadViewer, I get the same list of processes and I can select and attach to the process.
What's going on here? I think I'm using the Xcode->Attach action correctly, but can't get the result I want.
