Blair,
put the library into the Get Info, Build Options, rather than dragging
it into the project. It's the simplest way to switch between different
library vesrsions/names with debug/release (in fact I really haven't
found another one (not that I botherd to search))

Okay, but I don't want to have to rebuild the library each time I switch

Here's a for-instance:
Assuming that the code in the library is frozen and the app has shipped.
Now you get a bug report that suggests a problem in the library. Both debug
and release builds of the library were built prior to shipping as separate
files. Now I want to rebuild the app in debug mode simply by changing the
popup from Release to Debug and automatically include the debug version of
the library.
Can this be done?

Ooops...guess I wasn't clear here.
What I mean is I want to be able to build the application such that
when I
switch from Release to Debug it will turn off the release build of the
library and turn on the debug build.
If the library is built with an Xcode project that shares the same
Build Results folder with your application, this is automatic.
