Discussion of iPhone development is off topic for this list unless or until the iPhone NDA is lifted.

To see the little black window in IB that shows the connected outlets you CONTROL-CLICK on File's Owner or any of the other items in the xib window.  

I recommend that you set the xib window to display in list mode so you can see all the views and controllers in the xib.  It's a good practice to check all of the connections in all of the views and controllers in the xib with the little black window if you make changes in the xib.




I've done steps 1-5, above, and I don't get "a transparent panel showing the available outlets for the source object". No connection seems to have been made.
