Solved, at least so far.  I owe the list an apology for this posting.
A wise person said before you send a message, wait overnight.

I was in a state of utter desparation last night.  Today I reread
the Cocoa bundles guide and the Xcode document chapter on
targets, and now I'm rolling along.

Sorry for the noise on the list.
