Using expl(), etc.

Am I correct in surmising that, in Tiger+, expl() takes and returns long
doubles but does not allow one to work with exponents any larger than those
for standard doubles? This appears to be the case.

If so, is there some standard workaround for this? Suppose I had to compute
expl(2000) without knowing in advance that expl() would overflow. What
should I do?

TIA.
