Git and the .xcodeproj bundle

While I'm on the subject of versioning the project file, I've been
wondering: Is the project file usually in a consistent state while it
is open? Can it be brought to a consistent state? Or do I always have
to close a project before adding/committing it to a revision in Git?
The scenario is that I work my brilliance on a project, possibly
adding files. It works, and I want to commit it to the repository.
Leaving the project open, I issue "git commit -a". Does the .pbxproj
file necessarily include the new files?
(Google of "git pbxproj consistency" turned up nothing interesting in
the first few pages.)
