Two tips I've discovered:
1) You don't need to select the step, just hover the mouse near the
right side of the build results window. (Although I must say, buttons
that appear and disappear seems to go against the HIG, unless the HIG
has been revised to accommodate the current madness.)
2) You can expand all build results by option-clicking that button.
