I just compiled TextEdit on my 10.6.2 system with Xcode 3.2.1 without any issues. I don't know whether this is a 10.5 issue or if something is wrong with your system. I'm starting to suspect the latter given all the compilation issues you are having and might suggest you uninstall Xcode and reinstall it. See the directions in the release notes for the script to do the uninstall.
