It's probably easier to use a language like lua. It has a handy stack based interface with C. Someone mentioned python. I have no experience with that. I do have experience with flex/bison and there's really little that's less fun than fighting with shift/reduce errors.

If you really do want to go that route, re2c is something to consider instead of flex.
