Based on some off list advice, I tried a few experiments and here's
what I found:

- My src file as encoded as Western MacOS Roman.  My dst file was UTF-8.
- If I converted the dst file to MacOS Roman, behavior was still the same
- If I removed the dst file from the project and then re-added it, the
problem was fixed

strange but the paste/crash issue is solved.
