Looks as this is a pure memory management issue.
The library is supposedly GC capable but I think there are issues.

The demo code ships with a carbon and Cocoa versions.
I modified the Cocoa version to use GC and ran it in Xcode - success.
Further examination showed that the Carbon build was actually being run.

Running the Cocoa version from the finder revealed an OS compatibility problem.
