XCode debugging no editor

I'm certain this happens to others but several searches have not
turned up any hits.
I'm using Version 3.1.3 (pre-release) because I'm doing iPhone dev as
well as Apple dev.
I create a project (in this case it is a standard CLI c project).
I enter my source, take care of the typos set my break points and
debug once or twice.
Then I add a file (.c and .h) edit and compile and suddenly one of two
things happen.
1) The break point interiors turn yellow and will NOT stay solid blue
so that no breakpoints ever interrupt the execution of the program.
2) The debugger editor is completely blank. On the debugging console
everything shows as having finished executing but I never hit a
breakpoint.
It was working fine. I added a file. It is broken. Remove the file I
added it is STILL doing the same thing. All the breakpoints again have
yellow interiors and when I run, debug, or anything the breakpoints
turn yellow and no breakpoints are taken.
If I take the code out of XCode and run as gdb it breaks just fine.
Drop onto a *nix box and use gnu and gdb works fine. But XCode is just
not working. I would back down to 3.1.2 or even 3.1 or 2.5 or
something but they do the same thing. So clearly this is my fault but
I cannot find any information about the yellow interior meaning on
breakpoints.
BTW The editor is available for editing by clicking on the source.
Just not in the debugger window.
A pointer to a document page would be appreciated!
Thanks
Clark
