thank you for your suggestions.
I'd file a request for the ability to associate a "default
executable" with a given target.
Assuming that "I'd" means me, submitted as radar ID# 6980895 .

Actually I have burnt several days on that exercise and failed for
several reasons:
References to configuration specific external static libraries would
not update. This is of course asking for trouble when the external
applications have different object and vtab footprints. You already
mentioned "cannot alter the set of files" . I even tried to swap them
by configuration specific roots, causing funny Xcode internal
exceptions and freezes.
The list of products is also maintained only per target (active
configuration). If you have different product locations per
configuration that will confuse the project / target dependencies.

Thanks, I already do that because I prefer the objects outside my
source tree. Hint to others - it is not sufficient to set the OBJROOT,
the strategically best place is in the Xcode preferences.
