I just got my first iPhone Friday and I have to say that this code sign
issue is one of the most complex daunting things I have dealt with in a long
time. It took me about 2.5 days before I got it to work. IMHO, the
provisioning assistant doesn't work (at least for me) and the instructions
consist of a 52-page procedure and 5-6 videos, and still doesn't work.
One thing that finally got me through is figuring out that that there is
a bug in the xCode organizer. According the the docs, installing the
provisioning profile by dragging it into the organizer list is supposed to
"automatically copy the .mobileprovision file to the proper directory". Ha!
It lies! At least if you delete one that is already in the organizer and
try to drag in a new one. You have to manually drag it into your
user/library/MobileDevice/Provisioning Profiles folder before it will work.
That (and a few other issues) finally got me through.
BTW, maybe everyone but me knew this, but if you want to debug on the
phone itself, you have to permanently destroy your $700 iPhone for any
normal use (like telephone). I didn't find this out until I called in and
they explained that they tell you this in the licensing agreement. They
then proceeded to tell me that the vast majority of people actually read the
licensing agreement and nobody but me seemed to have a problem with the
process. Sure! Like I believe that!
This time yesterday, I was about to take my iPhone back and tell them to
put it "where the sun doesn't shine". I've calmed down since then and am
now looking forward to getting some productive applications out,
particularly using the accelerometer, which is why I needed to run it on the
actual phone in the first place.
BTW, the Dudney, et al, pdf iPhone book through Pragmatic Programmers
has now been updated and expanded about 50% for 3.0. I highly recommend it.
